Notes from Capitol Square
Alright, I know that I’m a few days late on this one, but I still wanted to share my thoughts and observations about my day at the Capitol. These are kinda free form, but here we go. Musings below the fold.
-First and foremost, Suzanne Curran is one of the finest conservative activists we have in this great commonwealth of ours. She’s sharp, witty, personable, and a very hard worker. She also has a “bottom-up” approach that some activists don’t always take, being just as involved and interested in local affairs as she is in state and national affairs. I’ll upload her speech from the AFP Rally, but let’s just say its fantastic. I know that Suzanne earned a bit of a bad rap during the fiasco that surrounded the 2005 elections, but that was then and this is now. We would be mistaken not to embrace her as a conservative voice in the county and beyond.
-People are hoping mad about local politics as well as state and national politics. I’ll post about it later in detail, but suffice it to say that some citizens will be taking action over what they see as unnecessary purchases of school land.
-The new visitor’s center at the Capitol certainly looks nice, but it is rather unfriendly for people of limited mobility. Ramps are built in at certain areas, but in other parts you have to take two separate elevators to get to the main floor.
-Senator Cuccinelli is one of the funniest legislators. He also has an excellent legislative mind. We’ll post some remarks from him later.
-Wireless is pretty great all around capitol square
-Houdon’s statue of Washington continues to impress over 200 years later.
-I need to carry less crap in my pockets. Screwed up security every time.
-Matt Lohr has the finest secretary in the entire General Assembly
-The Senate and the House are almost like two entirely different planets, at least when it comes to the LA’s. Each has very little knowledge of what’s going on in the other chamber, and they largely seem like they don’t want to.
-Gary Frink, Todd Gilbert’s LA and the unknown 101st Delegate, continues to have one of the finest selections of chocolate in Capitol Square.
-After three years, a giant stuffed frog is still in Delegate Gilbert’s office. Received as a gift on Valentine’s Day 2006, the frog is so garish that apparently not even the Children’s Hospital will take it.
-Downtown Richmond is changing, and for the better.
-George Allen continues to bring ‘em to their feet after all these years.
-Paul Harris should have run for something. I think he may have missed his shot.
-I really, really miss working in Capitol Square. The whole day re-invigorated me and convinced me that professional politics is where I need to be.
